Herbie the calf escaped from slaughter CBS 2 New York

(CBS) BROOKLYN The 4-month-old calf that made a break for it three days ago, dashing out of a truck taking it to the slaughterhouse and setting off a wild chase by police through the streets of Bay Ridge, has escaped certain death.

The deadline for the owner to claim the animal has gone. Probably because he would have had to answer a lot of questions from us and the police about from whom he got the animal and to whom he was selling the meat.

Ruth Allen, manager of the Animal Care and Control facility in East New York where Herbie, as they've named him, has been housed, said even if the owner showed up by the 1 p.m. deadline to lay a claim, "He would not get the animal. We are about life here. And from what we can see, this was just about killing the calf."
